If something's wrong, write.

Last updated: 6 September 2026

PaperDusk is a journal that keeps to itself. If something is broken, confusing, or wrong, write to darshanramani.dev@icloud.com — every email is read by the person who built the app. The questions people actually ask are below.

What PaperDusk does

Keep the day

Write, or talk. Voice notes are written down on your phone. Photos, stickers and one of five moods on every page. Widgets for today, the week, and your Sunday letter.

Read the week

A reflection asks one question about what you actually wrote. Every Sunday, a letter reads your week back to you. Insights show which days were bright and when you tend to write.

It keeps to itself

No account, no sign-in. Your journal lives on your phone, behind Face ID if you like. Export it as plain text any time, or back it up to your own iCloud with Plus.

Your journal

Where is my journal kept?

On your phone. PaperDusk has no accounts and no sign-in, so there is no copy of your writing on a server of ours, and no way to reach it from another device by logging in.

Is it backed up? What happens when I get a new phone?

Two things protect it. First, like any app, PaperDusk is included in your iPhone's own backup — iCloud Backup, or a backup to a computer — and restoring that backup onto a new phone brings your journal across with it. If iPhone backup is switched off, nothing is protecting your journal unless you turn on the second thing, so it is worth checking in Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup.

Second, PaperDusk Plus has its own Cloud Backup, in Settings → Privacy & backup. With it on, a complete copy of your journal — entries, photos, voice notes and letters — is kept in the private part of your own iCloud, where only PaperDusk on your devices can read it. On a new phone: install PaperDusk, turn Cloud Backup on, and tap Restore backup. The privacy policy says exactly what is stored and where.

Can I get my writing out?

Settings → Export journal. It makes a plain-text file of every entry, which you can save or send anywhere with the share sheet. Photos and voice notes are not in it — they stay in the app and in your backups. Each weekly letter also has Export as PDF, a keepsake of that week.

How do I lock the app?

Settings → App Lock. It uses Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode, and asks whenever you open PaperDusk. PaperDusk never sees or keeps any of them.

How do I delete everything?

Delete the app. There is no account and no copy of your journal on a server of ours, so that removes everything on the phone. If you had Cloud Backup on, also remove PaperDusk's data from iCloud in Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage; and if you cancel Plus, Apple keeps the record of the purchase as it does for any app.

Letters, reflections and the switch

When does the weekly letter arrive?

Once a week has finished, PaperDusk writes a letter about it, and the letter appears in Letters the next time you open the app. Nothing runs while the app is closed, so opening it after a quiet week is what brings the letter in.

Can I stop anything being sent for the AI?

Yes. Settings → Reflections and letters. With it off, nothing you write leaves your phone at all — the reflection questions and the letters then come from writing bundled inside the app instead. Nothing else about PaperDusk changes. What is sent while it is on is set out in the privacy policy.

Photos, the audio of your voice notes and your name are never sent anywhere, switch on or off. A voice note written down as text on your device is part of the entry's text — the privacy policy has the detail.

Voice notes and recording

Recording continues while your screen is locked, so a long voice note is not cut off when the phone dims. Recordings are saved on your device and are never uploaded, and PaperDusk writes them down using speech recognition that runs on the phone itself.

How do daily reminders work?

Settings → Daily reminder. Pick a time and allow notifications when iOS asks. If you said no to notifications earlier, iOS will not ask twice — turn them on in Settings → PaperDusk → Notifications.

PaperDusk Plus

Managing or cancelling my subscription

Plus is a subscription through the App Store, so Apple manages it: to change or cancel it, go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or ask Apple for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Cancelling keeps Plus until the end of the period you paid for.

Plus shows as off after a reinstall or on a new phone

Tap Restore purchase on the Plus screen. It asks the App Store, not us, and needs no account. If it finds nothing, the phone is signed in to a different Apple ID from the one that bought Plus.

If PaperDusk offers you a crisis line

PaperDusk can sometimes offer a helpline for the country your phone is set to. PaperDusk is not an emergency service and is not a substitute for professional care. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

Something is broken

Email darshanramani.dev@icloud.com. It helps to say which iPhone and which iOS version you are on, and what you did just before it went wrong. Please do not paste anything private from your journal — a description of the screen is enough.
